This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM); Smithsonian Institution. This position is responsible for a variety of cleaning assignments (cleaning/sanitizing bathrooms and removing trash) and miscellaneous manual laboring tasks (snow removal, animal excrement removal on sidewalks, furniture/chairs/event set up and other manual tasks) and other services mentioned below in the duty statement.

Responsibilities

Cleans offices, public/administrative bathrooms, corridors, storerooms, stairways or any area within the confines of the buildings(s) using brooms, mops, buckets, heavy duty vacuums, buffers and scrubbers.
Adjusts and cleans machines and changes brushes, rollers, buffers and other attachments.
Dusts, scrubs, sweeps, waxes and polishes horizontal surfaces such as floors, etc.,
Cleans mirrors, empties trash and recycle cans; washes walls, windows, air vents, blinds and fixtures.
Stocks all refillable dispensers and removes stains in all bathrooms/offices from various walls and floor surfaces using chemicals and various cleaning solutions and equipment.
Shampoos, vacuums, scrubs, strips, waxes, polishes linoleum, tile, wood, terrazzo, concrete, marble, carpet and other various kinds of surfaces using appropriate solutions, strippers, shampoos, waxes and equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Assignments involve moderately heavy physical effort and requires continuous standing, bending, stooping and reaching. Must carry and set up ladders and scaffolding as there is occasional climbing and working from ladders and scaffolding. Also requires frequent lifting and emptying of wastebaskets and occasionally lifting, pushing, moving and carrying items weighing up to about 50 pounds. Requires occasional operation of heavy powered scrubbers and floor buffers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent usually works indoors, in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation but will be exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors. The incumbent may be exposed to possible hazardous effects associated with the use of various cleaning solutions, hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens and bodily fluids. In addition to minor injuries such as cuts and bruises associated with cleaning tasks, the incumbent may be exposed to serious injury from falls from ladders and scaffolding and when using heavy powered equipment.

Occasionally exposed to inclement weather. Incumbent is required to work from a variety of heights in the cleaning of venetian blinds, ceiling fixtures and room partitions, etc.

NOTE:

Will be required to report to or remain at work for his or her regular tour of duty during administrative closings due to hazardous weather or other emergency situations. Must be willing to work overtime and fill in for staff as needed on holidays, weekends or late evenings.
