Purpose of Classification
The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of routine support (non-professional) duties relating to the overall operation of the public library. This Library Assistant will be required to work Saturdays to accommodate library visitors during weekend hours.
Essential Functions
Implements all circulation policies and procedures; executes the overall operation of the circulation desk. Performs circulation duties; checks books in and out; retrieves books from book drop; takes overdue fines, writes receipts, and completes daily cash receipts; issues library cards; requests inter-library loan services; assists in managing circulation and patron services. Operates library facility; shelves books and audio-video; reads shelves; ensures shelves are in order; and assists in removing and restocking library inventories. Provides customer service to library patrons: assists patrons in choosing books to read; assists patrons with research material; looks up information in electronic information resources, encyclopedias, reference books, on-line catalog; directs and assists with reference questions; maintains all patron registration files. Helps patrons operate copier, computers, and Internet service; enrolls patrons in special programs, and provides general assistance. Processes incoming and outgoing mail; checks in periodicals. Repairs books and cassette sets or coordinates repairs with vendors; glues and/or tapes torn pages, replaces missing pages, re-inserts and glues loose pages, etc.; places mylar covers on books; reviews audio and video cassettes for damages and replaces as needed. Researches and processes missing materials; contacts patrons by phone regarding missing materials on their card with fines and/or lost fees; follows up with letter if not returned; places stop on patron accounts until issues are resolved; processes lists for send items, and unclaimed books. Processes new and gift books, audiovisual, and other library materials; stamps logo on book; types and attaches spine label; checks books into system. Designs and prepares displays, bulletin boards, and posters. Answers incoming telephone calls and directs call to various work stations. Attends various library meeting and training sessions; assigns volunteers and assists them as necessary. Adds patron reserve book requests to computer system; notifies patrons when their request has arrived. Operates a computer, printer, copier, facsimile machine, telephone, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. The County may require employees to make either a temporary, or long-term, permanent transfer to another library location to accommodate the organization’s business needs. In the event of a declared state of emergency, employees in this classification may be called to work during days or hours other than those for which they are regularly scheduled.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; six months of experience in library work, clerical, customer service, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Fingerprinting required.
