Job Description

The editorial assistant is an integral part of the REAL SIMPLE print editorial team, assisting in the day-to-day production of the magazine and ensuring a smooth workflow and efficient operations.

The editorial assistant handles administrative duties for the staff, which includes:

Providing administrative, scheduling and expense support for the Editor In Chief;

Overseeing writer contracts, invoices and budget estimates;

Assisting with market work, fact-checking and general office tasks.

In addition, the editorial assistant pitches, researches, writes, assigns, and/or edits content for various sections of the magazine.

This position is a great opportunity for a promising junior editor who is highly motivated and organized, and for whom no task is too great or too small.

Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results

60%

Assists editorial staff with various administrative duties: Processes author contracts and contributor invoices for payment and tracks expenditures in issue log; submits expenses; schedules staff meetings; orders supply for staff and gets new employees, independent contractors and temps set up. Assists with project management as needed.

40%

Contributes to magazine: Conducts story and market research for editors; compiles, pitches, researches and writes short items. Assists with fact checking.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience:

Editorial internship or assistant position at large consumer magazine or web site preferred.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.
Knowledge and demonstrated expertise and enthusiasm in magazine publishing.
Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to interact responsibly and politely with readers, experts and senior management.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Strong computer skills. Proficiency with Word, InCopy, Excel, Woodwing and PowerPoint helpful.
