The Miramar Firefighter Intern Program advocates for the continuity of a workforce culture that values Diversity and Inclusivity. Taking the intentional and deliberate action to cultivate talent, Miramar Firefighter Interns will do so with teamwork leadership and safety. Firefighter/Paramedic must complete extensive training and respond to a wide variety of emergency situations where problem solving, and critical thinking is crucial in resolving incidents quickly and calmly. Such emergency situations are quite diverse and can range from fighting fires, search and rescue missions, all varieties of life-threatening emergencies, and public service. Firefighters work to protect life, property and the environment from the effects of environmental elements such as fire, natural and human disasters and hazardous substances.

HOW IS THE PROGRAM STRUCTURED?
This Firefighter Internship program prepares students to engage and learn about the Firefighter/Paramedic career. Each student must complete the requirements needed to secure an Emergency Medical Technician National certificate, Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance from the Division of State Fire Marshal office, and the long program needed to become a National Registered l paramedic.
In addition to attending classes, the employee will be required to report to their assigned fire station for a minimum of twelve (12) hours per week. While at the station they will be assigned a mentor, who will help guide the employee’s development and aid in the understanding of the profession. Upon successful completion of certification processes for EMT, Firefighter, and Paramedic, the employee will be given the opportunity and education for a, full-time Firefighter/Paramedic position with the City of Miramar Fire-Rescue Department. The students will have the opportunity to complete an Associate of Science Degree.
Length of program: Participants in the City of Miramar Intern program will complete up to three (3) years of part-time work to support the successful completion of the program’s prerequisites. The completion of the program can take up to 36 months, depending on school schedules. Candidates completing all prerequisites ahead of schedule will be enlisted as employment eligible in accordance to the programs’ planning. Register confirmed candidates will be made part of all City of Miramar open recruitment processes for Firefighters.
Wages: While working at the City of Miramar, students will receive a trainee’s wage, applicable to their level of certification/ qualification starting at $12.50 per hour.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
Program Content
This series represents training classifications in the Fire Rescue Department during which time the employee will be required to attend an accredited College for EMT licensure classes, a certified Fire Academy for Fire School, and an accredited college for their Paramedic licensure classes. The Intern must successfully complete all classes to remain in the program. Upon successful completion of the series, which includes State and National Certifications, the employee has the opportunity to become a regular, full-time firefighter/ paramedic with the Miramar Fire-Rescue Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Firefighter/Paramedic Intern-in-Training I
Include the following: Attend required classes and successfully complete EMT licensure classes. During this training period, the employee will attend their assigned fire station for a minimum of twelve (12) hours per week and will be assigned a mentor. Upon successful completion of the EMT classes and receipt of EMT National Register, the employee will be promoted to Firefighter/ Paramedic Intern-in-Training II.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Firefighter/Paramedic Intern-in-Training II
Include the following. Attend required classes and successfully complete Fire School at an Academy. During this training period, the employee will attend their assigned fire station for a minimum twelve (12) hours per week and will be assigned a mentor in the field. Upon successful completion of the Fire School and receipt of Florida State Certificate of Compliance, the employee will be promoted to Firefighter paramedic in training III.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Firefighter/Paramedic-in-Training III
Include the following: Attend required classes and successfully complete Paramedic licensure classes. During the training period, the employee will attend their assigned fire station for a minimum of twelve (12) hours per week and will be assigned a mentor in the field, upon successful completion of the Paramedic license, the employee will be promoted to a regular, full-time firefighter/ paramedic position.

Minimum Qualifications
Age requirement: ages 18-25
Education requirement: HS diploma or GED
Open to City of Miramar residents, Everglades HS Fire Academy graduates, or Tri- County Fire-Rescue Cadet graduates or candidates with proof of post-secondary path in Fire Science
Valid Driver’s license
Meet the requirements of Florida Statute 633.34 –
Firefighter Qualifications for Employment; and Florida Statute 112.011(2)(b), Felons, Removal of Disqualification for Employment Exceptions
Be a non-user of tobacco for at least a year prior to date of application
Two (2) letters of recommendation; (1) one letter of moral character and one (1) letter of reference that supports candidate’s ability to perform duties of the program
Physically and mentally fit, and must have the ability to function as a team player
All candidates must pass a physical ability test
Must have normal color perception. Must have normal hearing
Acceptable drug test results, background check, and fit for duty evaluation upon job offer
Physically able to perform job duties
Ability to commit to a maximum of three-year work obligation

This program is FREE to qualified candidates.
Interns will receive pay while training with the City of Miramar Fire-Rescue Department.
Drug Testing Requirement
Applicants for positions in this classification are required to pass a drug- screening test. This classification is currently in a designated “sensitive” class for which drug testing is required.
