Compost Driver
Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY20, the Garden served 164,546 visitors, including 14,378 schoolchildren. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever-changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants, and cultures meet.
The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions. The Compost Driver is based at Queens Botanical Garden and reports to the Project Manager of the NYC Compost Project Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden. The Compost Driver is part of a small and passionate team, responsible for providing safe and efficient delivery and pick up of organic materials to and from food scrap drop off sites in NYC.
The Compost Driver supports the Operations Coordinator with preparing, loading, and unloading all delivered materials. The Driver is expected to provide professional customer service, maintain delivery reports, follow all Covid-19 and equipment safety protocols, and communicate effectively with the Compost Project Manager. We are looking for a detailed oriented experienced driver who is passionate about sustainability.
Responsibilities:
Deliver and/or pickup food scrap collection bins, browns mixes, tools and promotional materials to community sites
Support the Operations Coordinator by preparing materials for delivery, including loading and unloading Isuzu dump truck with materials
Drive a 14’ long dump truck with lift gate, skid steer, and tractor
Follow hauling driving routes at scheduled time
Maintain a safe driving records and following all transportation laws
Prepare, keep track of and organize driving and material logs; submit logs on time
Provide friendly customer service to community members and answer questions about composting, recycling, Queens Botanical Garden programs, and hosting public food scrap drop off sites
Attend meetings
Support the department as needed
Requirements:
Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record
Experience driving large vehicles ranging from 18-24 feet, dump truck is a plus
Familiar with and experience driving in NYC streets and truck routes
Comfortable interacting with the public
Calm under pressure
Able to work mornings and weekends
Flexible schedule, must work on the weekend
Able to lift bins and materials up to 50lbs
Creative problem solver with ability to make quick decisions on the spot
Familiar with Outlook email and calendar, and Excel
Excellent communication and organization skills
Fluency in Mandarin is a plus
Salary is $24 per hour. Hours vary but may be up to 24 hours per week. Must be available on weekends.
