Summer Camp Counselors Full Time

Job Title: Camp Counselor

Reports to: Coordinator Team

Position Purpose

Counselors are the primary caregivers and source of enthusiasm for each camper. The Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out programs and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills, while being a positive role model. See below for more information regarding specialized activity areas available.

Dates of Employment: June 1, 2021 through August 1, 2021

Weekly Pay Range Starting At: $255 per week, commensurate with experience.

Physical requirements of all camp staff positions include prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to utilize camp equipment; requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to live in a camp setting and work extended hours; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, horses etc.

Essential Job Functions:

· Attend all virtual training sessions between June 1-June 5.

· Attend all in-person training sessions.

Ensure campers are properly supervised at all times, including sharing cabins during nighttime.
Ensure daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
Actively and enthusiastically participate in all program areas as assigned.
Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
Lead and assist with teaching of activities, and support skill progression at all times: day, evening and cabin time.
Oversee completion of kapers/cleaning tasks as necessary, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, bathrooms, etc.
· Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to Coordinator Team.

· Choose 1 or more specialty area to develop skills and/or obtain certification.

Specialty areas:

Arts & Crafts: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of arts and crafts activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assists in the management of the arts and crafts building and related equipment and supplies. Develops and delivers arts and crafts program that is appropriate for the age and ability pf the campers. Should be familiar with various types of arts and crafts including, but not limited to: ceramics, friendship bracelets, painting, wood burning, tie-dye, drawing, etc.
Lifeguard: furthers the mission of the camp by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s aquatic activities. Assist in the management to the physical operation of the aquatic facilities and equipment. Should be Red Cross or BSA Lifeguard certified or willing to participate in the training. Maintains aquatic equipment and reports any issues to camp maintenance staff.
Outdoor/Camping Skills: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of outdoor skills activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assists in the management of the outdoor skills equipment and supplies. Should be familiar in topics such as, but not limited to: shelter building, backpacking, hiking, water filtration, knots, knife safety, outdoor cooking, Leave No Trace, fire building, orienteering, etc.
Cooking: furthers the mission of the camp through development and delivery of cooking activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assists in the management of the cooking/kitchen equipment and supplies. Should be familiar with cooking techniques for both indoor and outdoor cooking, and baking.
Environmental Education: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of nature or environmental activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities and reflect the camp’s commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. Should be familiar with native Florida wildlife and ecosystems. (Wildwood Only, Will be tasked with the care and maintenance of the live animals in our Griffin Nature Center)
Archery: furthers the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of archery activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Assists in the management to the physical operation of the archery and related equipment. Should be certified in archery or willing to obtain certification through USA-Archery.
· Waterfront: Camp Wai Lani only) To further the mission of the camp through assisting in the planning and implementation of swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle board activities at the camp’s waterfront. Develop (with the help of the Waterfront Coordinator) and deliver activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Assist in the care of the waterfront’s facilities and equipment. Should be Red Cross Small Craft Safety certified or willing to obtain.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

Must be 18 years of age

Ability to interact and relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

Demonstrate knowledge and skill in assigned program areas.

Knowledge and acceptance of beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout movement; willing to register as a member of Girl Scouts of the USA.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
